Rock Creek Trail was hit hard by the tornado and LR Parks and Recreation has been working diligently to reopen our little slice of heaven in the middle of the City. September 28th is National Public Lands Day, the largest single volunteer event in the nation, and we are celebrating it at Rock Creek Trail and the surrounding streets.

As a signature event of the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), NPLD fosters a strong connection between people and the environment, educating and cultivating environmental stewards. Held on the fourth Saturday in September each year, NPLD is also a “Fee-Free Day” where entrance fees are waived at national parks and public lands. With support from federal and state agencies, corporate sponsors, and nonprofits, this event ensures resilient natural spaces for generations to come, encouraging volunteering and environmental engagement.

The theme for NPLD 2024 is “Together for Tomorrow.” From trail maintenance to tree planting, beach clean-ups to forest bathing, and more, volunteers of all ages and abilities will roll up their sleeves and join forces for a common goal—stewarding America’s natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

Join us at 9 a.m. at 200 N. Bowman (behind the strip mall) to clear out the trail, surrounding land, cut back invasive species and pick up litter out of the creek and off the trail and surrounding streets. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.
